It's more than tracking difficulty
I think it may represent a deeper issue. Specifically that the business world hasn't gotten its collective mind around how to deal with Linux. It's one of those challenges to conventional thinking that comes along all to rarely anymore.

All the ho-ha back and forth about which is more productive, which is more user friendly...smoke screens. The real issue is Linux refuses to fit in a neat little corporate box. You can't dictate terms to open source developers, there are no open source advocates with expense accounts and, perhaps worst of all, no one to blame if something goes wrong. Administrators have to own failure if something stops working. No way to point the finger at MSFT, a convenient target in the blame game.

I also believe people are overlooking the most significant point in Yankee and Didio reacting to the open source community is that they felt the need to react at all. If it wasn't hurting them somewhere, they wouldn't respond. And in regards to their funding, they take a lot of money from MSFT. If you think they're going to promote research that threatens the gravy train, you're on crack. Surveys don't always mean jack. There are lots of ways to pose questions to get the answers you want.

Besides, I've met maybe two or three analysts in all my years in IT who were worth a damn anyway. Do your own research.
