Corporatocracy on the rise
I really agree with dmennie's comment "Everything important is in play right now from the minimum wage to health insurance to Social Security." What I see happening is the morphing of our democracy into a corporatocracy, where the major corporations are the real arbiters of power. More disturbing, most of these powerful corporations are multi-nationals, with doubtful loyalty to the United States.

A long time ago the Supreme Court defined corporations as "persons." They have now become mega-persons. Wal*Mart wants to build a monster store in a small town? The objections of a few thousand residents are overridden by the wishes of the mega-person, Wal*Mart the community killer. Try to clean up the environment? The polluting corporations have their sponsored politicians water down or abort any attempts. And the corporatocracy has the ideal administration in power, a pliant MBA at the head, since a corporation or conglomerate can't be physically administered the oath of office and seat itself behind the desk in the Oval Office. But the corporate interest is there, and its proxy occupies the chair behind the desk.

A couple of advantages corporate "persons" have: they don't get shot up and maimed or killed in Iraq, and they don't get outsourced. With a little more of the administration's economic policy, they won't pay taxes either (if they even do now).
