military vs commercialisation
Many technologies are borne from military requirements. However with laser technologies in development (eg the US ABL programme), I wonder if this is an old world technology now?

China also has quite a strong laser weapons program, if you believe many of the reports they are in fact ahead of the US in this regard.

I can however see it as a viable step forwards in the commercial world in the not-too-distant future ( perhaps 10 - 20 years away).

I look forward to experiencing this in my lifetime.
