Only comparing GPL to other licenses
But in order to protect those freedoms, restrictions are placed on the distributor.

Fair enough but the GPL goes much further than other licenses that are in place to protect the programmer's freedoms. Calling GPL code "free" next to BSD licensed code is like calling a BMW M3 "cheap" next to a Honda Fit. Sure, the M3 (GPL) might be "cheap" compared to a Ferrari (closed source) but most people would probably argue with you if you ever called the M3 a "cheap" car. I have no issues with calling GPLd code "Open Source" but I shudder every time anyone says GPL code is "free" and I suspect that is what others have complained about too.
