So it's probably not too late
So it's probably not too late to reduce our CO2 emissions to levels that out planet can sustain. And it's not too late to plant more plants, either.

Personally, I think we should invest heavily in the electric car - It's got the least amount of technical challenges, it's available now, and it's completely clean. All we need is somebody with enough influence to get America to rally behind it.

"And I do think that plant growth is part of the carbon sink equation but that also requires us to stop cutting down rain forests..."

Well, the good news is that we're using a lot less paper now that almost everything is electronic and due to our recycling programs. In addition, many logging companies are replanting, and there are a lot of other replanting programs as well. We just need to keep the pressure on to keep these things going.

One problem I see is that our recycling just isn't comprehensive enough. I've been in many places where the recycling program won't recycle everything that's recyclable.

In the end, though, this is a pretty inexact science involving a lot of variables - so far, the worst case scenarios aren't playing out. People told us years ago that New York should be underwater by now, and it hasn't happened. I think the planet adapts better than many environmentalists think it does. But I think it's still a good idea to do what we can.

What we need is a bold leader - somebody who is not afraid of large scale changes or controversy. Somebody who will put their foot down and not bow to pressure from the oil industry.

I know America can do it - we've done large scale changes before, with our highway system, the automobile, the moon, the railroad, etc. If Henry Ford can give the automobile to everybody, we can make an electric car for everybody. We just need somebody who can cut through party lines and rally support.

If there's one thing I want the next president to do, it's to say "we're going to have an electric car in every garage before I leave office," then proceed to make it happen. I know it's possible.

I know we can make it go across party lines also. The Democrats are easy, they're environmentalist by default, but the Republicans also have an interest in this: The Republicans are worried about our dependence on foreign oil. If we can find somebody who can convince them that this is feasible and that it'll alleviate our dependence on foreign oil (which it will), then I'm sure they'll be more than happy to get rid of our dependence and move on to something better.

Sorry about the essay, but I'm really sick of my own party (yes, I'm Republican) ignoring this issue. There's no good reasoning behind their current stance other than to be the opposite of Democrats. Which I'm starting to get a bit sick of myself. Must we be opposed on all issues? I think not. I think that taking care of the Earth is important, and that we shouldn't ignore it just because the Democrats are doing it. It's time we got our heads out of the sand and started realizing this isn't about politics.
