focus on transportation all wrong
The proof that the goal of the greens is to change society rather than to save the planet is their focus on transportation. Transportation accounts for a minority of carbon emissions. If we had a best case transportation system we would still have a carbon problem. AND, making transportation more green is HARD TO DO! For example, if you have electric cars, are we not going to build more fossil fueled power plants to charge 'em? That means more transmission lines. That means an electric car is just a little more green than a diesel and the infrastructure costs will be huge.

Reality is that diesel is an excellent transportation fuel, and it can be just as green as anything else if you produce it from renewable resources. The easiest, cheapest and fastest way to make transportation green is to use biodiesel.

If carbon is what concerns you, the real focus should be on increasing non-carbon power plants (nuclear), increasing distributed energy generation (ie: solar), and increasing efficiency of our buildings and their contents. These are all easier to do and offer greater rewards than changing transportation.

I'm not saying we shouldn't try to change transportation too, but the cost/reward ratio is way off compared to other things we can do. Therefore the greens must have some other reason to focus on transportation.
