...at the car, maybe, but what about at the power plant where the electricity is generated? Power just doesn't magically grow in the wall behind the outlet.
And, if everyone did switch to electric cars, where would all the energy to charge them come from? A lot of places have already maxxed out their existing power generation capabilities (those "rolling blackouts" in California...). What's going to happen when a couple million Los Angelenos get home from work and plug their cars in for a charge, all at the same time. At the same time a couple million stoves and ovens are firing up to make dinner? And the load on the air conditioners ramps up to dump the waste heat from all those stoves and ovens?
And, no doubt, any proposals to build new power plants, nuclear or of any other sort, to provide the extra energy to charge all those electric cars will be met with howls of outrage.
A wholsale switch to electric cars without addressing the rest of the problem would be a wholesale disaster.
