Sorry, but other first world nations
Oh like Japan, Germany and such have excellent mass transit systems. The problem is American mind set. You can be green and still be comfortable. A person, a single individual does NOT need an SUV to be comfortable to drive to work. Nor do they need it to be safe.

The big reason for SUV's is the pure and simple fact that people can't drive anymore nor can they park. So by driving a rolling urban assault vehicle they can compensate for their inadequacies. It's also another way they assuage their lack of self worth. "Look at me! I make a lot of $$$ (or I want you to think that!) I am important! I drive the biggest waste machine on the street!" That's pretty much what I see when I watch these behemoths rolling down the road.

Meanwhile, if I need to drive (which is rare now and I am very comfortable as well as in excellent health... what's your resting pulse?) I have the good ol' Prius, or my BMW GS1200. Both get good gas milage and take up very little space. Both are easy to park and drive as well as check this out... environmentally friendly (well the GS not so much but...) AND they both use a minimal amount of a dwindling commodity that DOES contribute to the overall problem. Whenever possible I will ride my bike or walk to my destination.

Problem, Americans are lazy and un willing to do something that would NOT only benefit them, but their off-spring (if they have any) as well as their nation. The greater good is not in the American mindset anymore. And this is bad. It's bad because it fractures the nation and prevents us from moving forward. Instead we are stuck in the 19th century when it comes to personal transportation while the rest of the world is passing us by (as usual it seems now a days.)
