Subsidizing poverty
Both of the previous posts have valid points. While I suspect that some of those working at low-wage jobs would have difficulty making it without help, even with good financial self-discipline, the welfare system itself subsidizes low-wage jobs that would be much harder to fill if welfare wasn't available to fall back on (thus employers would be forced to raise wages if the subsidy wasn't available).

I'm not sure what the answer is (I'm quite sure "let 'em starve" isn't at all viable), but we do need to do more to encourage self-sufficiency all the way around. In the mean time, members of the public would be well-advised to consider whether the businesses they patronize are costing them more in taxes than they're saving at the cash register.
