Energy disruption
2005, when energy prices were at all time highs, these increased prices ate into Wal-Mart profits. Considering the geo-political instability of the Mid-East, and the potential energy disruption of a major hurricane in the Gulf (again), Wal-Mart, being the bottom line thinkers they are, looked for ways to mitigate these issues. And then package it into a environment friendly marketing strategy to appeal to the masses and negate some of the negative public opinion of Wal-Mart.
