As a matter of fact...Yes....
I read a couple of the articles you linked to. There are serious flaws in the claim made that this guy Whitehead actually ever flew.

There's NO evidence.

If anything, THE one thing the Wright's did was have a photographer standing by and had photographic evidence from the get go.

Secondly, if Whitehead's flyer #21's statistics are to be believed - carried 2 people, flew up to 200 feet altitude, etc... - then I'd say it sounds to me that the whole thing was a significant step ahead of the original Wright Flyer which barely could get more than a few feet off the ground. How is it we never heard of it? You'd think that Whitehead would have taken the plans down to the patent office post haste, and then start SELLING them? That IS, basically WAS what the Wrights did.

You'd think the guy who came up with flight would have been bright enough to see the potential and capitalize on it.
