SW US Solar Farms
I read a design proposition a couple years ago where it claimed that a 100x100 mile area designed to produce a biomass from algae after flooding with saltwater (death valley is below sea level) would provide the feedstock for a biodiesel plant to manufacture enough liquid fuel to eliminate all oil imports.

Estimated Cost based on existing prototypes: 140 billion

Life Expectency: Indefinitely, given proper maintenace.

And two of its most major selling points is that it would make use of our existing distribution channels and engines, and would have a ZERO CO2 footprint on the environment.

Also, if you do some checking, a significant area of the southern US have a radiant exposure above 2,000 btu per square foot during the summer months. So you do the math... solar works, even up north.

Also, if four of the midwestern states built wind farms well within the rhealm of reason, it is said that alone would produce enough electricity to match the output of today's power plants.

The only question to ask is, "WHY AREN"T WE DOING IT THEN?!"
