As to your points...
Yes there will be losses, but remember that solar energy is free, so even if you have a high amount of loss, it is probably not that big of an issue as you simply scale the solar farm to account for the losses. Higher up-front cost but afterwards the fuel is free anyway. You can convert the electrical energy to other forms (hydrogen from water, for instance), and ship that accross the country. I am sure there are all sorts of ways to do this.

As far as night-time goes, I remember that there was some sort of way that they could work around that issue. It involves a modified sterling engine with a container with salt water. This water will then become super-heated during the day, and during the night, the sterling engine would feed off this heat.

So basically I think there are solutions to all of these issues you raise. None of these issues are showstoppers as far as I can tell.
