I honestly didn't know if there was enough solar radiation or not, so I wasn't going to argue that point.
And your reply arrived while I was typing mine, so I missed it before clicking Submit.
I do see some logistic problems with attempting to go ALL solar though. First involves the distribution losses of trying to get power from the desert SW to say Boston or NYC. And then there's night time, which is a problem for solar, unless you have some humongous storage capabilities. An acceptable fall back though would be wind, which is arguable just another form of solar energy...
