While I'm not going to argue that, I don't think anyone is realistically suggesting using solar as the only means of generating power

While such a solar farm would obviously be very expensive, I wonder how it compares to the total cost of our current electricity-generating system. You also need to factor in the cost of fuel for our current plants, versus no cost for fuel with the solar solution. And I bet maintenance cost of a solar farm is less than that of an equivalent fossil-fuel burning plant.
