Solar
"there is no(t) enough energy in solar radiation striking the planet to power an industrial society."

While I'm not going to argue that, I don't think anyone is realistically suggesting using solar as the only means of generating power. Ignoring the initial outlay for the panel (which hopefully will get smaller) it is a completely renewable source of power that we should be using to supplement the larger generating sources that can power an industrial society. If every home was getting only 10% of their power needs from alternative energy such as solar or wind, think of how this would lighten the load of the primary generating stations we still need to run the factories.

Regarding nuclear, the waste bothers me more than the hysteria. I live within a 10 mile radius of TMI and I'm not as worried about the reactor as I am the waste generated by it. We still haven't come up with a long term solution for that.
