Not sure who's house only requires 3KW but my house sure uses more than that at any given point. My stove uses about 4KW for its broiler element alone. Then there are the lights (about 10 x 100W), a vacuum cleaner, a water heater, an AC unit, a hairdryer, a few computers, etc etc.
I don't know what the typical KW usage of a home is but I would guess it is at leat in the 15 - 30KW range. The max amount (say everything happens to turn on at the same time) must be quite a bit higher still.
