Bat tech will be good enough..
Currently we get ~200Wh/kg which is about 1/4 of theoretical for Li-Ion battery chemistry.

Theoretical for other various battery chemistries goes as high as ~4000Wh/kg.

Gasoline works out to around 12000Wh/kg, however thermodynamics limits an ICE to around 25% maximum efficiency. (3000Wh/kg) And a lot less for non-hybrids in city driving.. 10% or less. (1200Wh/kg or less)

Add in the fact the processes of obtaining gasoline is somewhat energy intensive. A normal 20 to 30% energy investment overhead, (Percentage climbing higher as depletion progresses), drops those effiency numbers down to 2100Wh/kg(hybrid) and 840Wh/kg(non-hybrid) not including the extra weight for ICE and it's support infrastructure.
(Which goes away for an EV. ~Exhaust, cooling, filters, piping, heavy duty suspension & frame, power steering, starting battery, starter, alternator, pumps, transmission, differential, oversized tires, fuel tank, filler pipe, etc.)

Net result, a simple practical EV using existing tech is right around the corner.

P.S. One could rent a lightweight generator/trailer and hitch it up to an EV and give it nearly unlimited range.
