there is also the fact of using your indoor lighting less frequently. A habit I finally got the kids into. During daylight hours we use natural lighting as much as possible. There are exceptions obviously but by reducing how much you use your lights will also affect their life span.

Another thing is most of the new energy efficient bulbs put out more lumens (as noted in the article) with less power and from what I am seeing they actually last longer than a regular bulb with a lower heat signature as well.
