An electric motor doesn't work like a combustion engine. The purpose of gears with an ICE (internal combustion engine is so that you can keep the engine in a decent power curve AND reduce RPM while cruising. Since each rotation consumes some fuel even under virtually no-load conditions (like going down hill) it helps a lot to reduce the rpms. Electric motors have very different characteristics (max torque at 0 rpm). They consume max current when not turning at all. The current goes down as the motor unloads. You could theortically get by with no gears at all but your acceleration and/or topspeed would be affected.
