Research Groups Bad Bad Bad
Maybe having a research group is not such a good idea. In effect you're saying that THIS group of people will work on new ideas and THAT group of people not. Yet anyone can work on new ideas, since anyone can have new ideas.

What I've seen happen is that the 'not-invented-here' mentality sets in, the research group are defensive against ideas coming in from other parts of a company, because they have to justify their budget.

Plus nobody invents in a vacuum, it's the bouncing of ideas that causes new ideas to form. The people at the sharp end of day to day work that have the maximum exposure to fresh thinking.

It gets worse when you see how these Research departments are run in practise, for example managers will subdivide the research into smaller boxes. Research/Audio, Research/Video... etc.

They then recruit "Out of the box thinkers to dream up radical new ideas, needed for role in Research, to work on Video projects, in particularly to invent radical ways to speed up integer FFT transforms on image comparison using Bayers Theorem Version 2.1....." Basically out of the box thinkers needed for very small box.

I can't believe that the few ideas Microsoft presents at TechSnack represents the total ideas in the 50,000+ people Microsoft has.
