You are more right than wrong there....
It's a combination of factors, all of which have produced more bad than good:

Women in the workplace - Politicians love it as it makes them look good on feminism, and think it provides more tax revenue. Great for employers as it doubles the available workforce, and allows dilution of payroll. Lousy for families as Mom is not home.

No fault divorce/divorce looked on as okay by culture etc. - corollary of above - since both parents maintain two households, more work has to be done to provide revenue. This assumes of course that the non-custodial partner pays support.

Feminization of culture - Ritalin anyone? Used to be kids were too busy playing outside - got rid of allllllllll that excess energy. Now, got to dope them up and plant them in front of the tube - besides Mom can't be bothered because of (see above).

Lousy urban planning - where exactly are kids supposed to go and do once they get there living in a cookie cutter suburban setting/urban setting?
