Obesity: the new excuse
There are a number of people in the US who want to control how everyone else lives. The proof of that control is people doing things that they don't enjoy while giving up the things they like.

To me, the emblematic moment was reported from a meeting after the issuance of aspartame (Equal, an articial sweetener). The purpose of the meeting was to find ways to prevent aspartame from being used.

With the crowd whipped into a frenzy, one that reminded the reporter of a religious cult, a woman stood up and shouted, "What this country doesn't need is something else that tastes sweet."

What the obesity issue doesn't take away, global warming will.

The question being debated is not how to lose weight. If you read about that, you'll find that diet and exercise almost always fail. So far the only thing that works is surgery. The drug companies, you'll be pleased to know, Jim, are hard at work on an expensive solution.

Why people overeat when they see they are getting fat is a psychological issue, not something that can be treated by a social prescription.
That prescription being: eat what you don't like and then go exercise until you injure yourself.

The same people pushing global warming pushed global cooling years ago and overpopulation in between. The earth is helping them out, because this is one of the typical warming periods that happens every few hundred thousand years. Untangling the impact of human actions will take decades, though I saw an article recently in which scientists are getting ready to give up the effort. Enough opinion makers have flipped that the controllers don't need science any more.

The issue is actually whether you are going to be controlled by those who get a thrill from controlling you.
Down with all tyrants, private and governmental, petty and powerful.

I've permitted myself a Friday rant. Thanks for listening.
