"Cook your own food?! But... but that's like compiling your own sources in Linux!"

I DO cook my own food! Imagine that: doing something oneself! And people should cook more for themselves. An equivalent meal that you get in a restaurant which is made at home is always healthier, as you get to use fresher ingredients and control the amount of salt and fat. A big part of the obesity problem is that most people are always eating on the go and so are constantly consuming food that is over-salted and contains more fat than neccessary.
I agree with you that Americans have become so lazy as to expect everything in life (even their wars) served up on a silver platter. But I don't live in a Windows world. I live in a Windows/Mac/linux world, where *I* call the shots, my friend. It is precisely that people expect everthing "done for them" which Microsoft has underhandedly capitalized on, and used to create the chain-jerking proprietary nightmare we have on our hands today.
