Thanks for the Thoughts, But I Still Disagree
I understand about the lack of an expectation of privacy when you post/send messages via the www. But I still disagree. I can best explain my reaction by two analogies:

1. Someone sues my estate after I die to get all of my handwritten documents - even if they are not addressed to or regarding the suing party. They have no rights to them - my estate does.

2. Regarding privacy, I agree regarding an expectation. An employer's right to read your email does not apply here, IMHO. An employee has notice that their email is not private. This was personal (from what I've read) email. And, the parents didn't sue the son's employer - they sued his email provider.

However, in this instance it feels more like someone going to the post office and stealing the mail after it's been sent. Or, reading you adult son/daughter's mail that gets delivered to your home. It's not your mail (it's adressed to your adult child) and it's morally wrong to read another person's mail. Or someone reading your diary.

And, yes, it does matter after someone has passed. It's called respect. You can respect both the living and the memory of the dead. Respect seems to be something that is falling by the wayside in the new, self-centered world we live in. I believe the parents were very self-centered in pursuing this. While they may have felt that it let them know a little more about their son, we all have things we don't want everyone to know. He deserved their respect in regards to his privacy and his choice to not include them in every aspect of his life.
