More likely luck. The original algo was pretty good +1, using Linux was a good choice because it got them the techie crowd support +1.
GMail is way late, and has lost its big advantage -1. Maps are better than the competitors +1. Search is currently poor -1.
Froogle needs human editors touch (a la shopping magazines) -1

Kind'o a mixed picture, they need to get the mail users in, because its those that stay loyal through thick and thin. If they can get those, even a major mess up wouldn't hurt them.
