Two points..
1) What congress is proposing has absolutely nothing to do with protecting rights. "This product may be insecure and invade privacy..." is nothing but FUD.

What *is* needed is disclosure by software makers of if/how/when the software product "phones home", or any nasty .. err.. "value added" surprises get bundled with your software.

2) It's all about balance. To take an analogy from the real world, if a kid's ball lands on your property, do you have the right to chop him up into little pieces when he tries to retrieve it (tresspassing on your property in the process! that hooligan!) and feed them to your dog? Of course not.

Should the RIAA have the right for search and seizure without going through proper channels? I say no. Why is it easier in America for music companies to prosecute copyright violators than it is for the FBI to investigate terrorists? Odd priorities, methinks..
