The problem is most people believe the lie that you will be able to work til you are 65 and retire.

I'm saving 40% of my income and expect to be able to retire at 53 if I wish to with a paid house, car, and high six figures in the bank. Easily 7 figures if I get any kind of break in the market at all (but it looks like the next 10 years are going to be secular bear which makes it tough.)

The problem of course is MEDICAL INSURANCE which is so expensive you have to have a job to keep it.

But I know a lot of programmers in their late 40's who have no savings. I also know a lot of programmers who haven't had good work for the last 5 years. This can be a grim field but when you are young, you do not realize it and think the money train is going on forever.
