Basically you need to learn a trade which requires you to physically do the work.

Plumbers, Electricians, Car Mechanics, etc. can all make money comparable to a programmer given that they invest 4-6 years (equivalent to college).

The medical field also has some good jobs that only require a six year degree that will grow as folks get old.

But programming as a career is a dead end in the US until our dollar drops in value or their currencies and salaries come way up.
