Smart choices
Clearly our smartest students have gotten the fact that programming is a dead end job in america and moved on to other fields.

Typical programming career.
1) Work 60 hour weeks from 20 to 35. Get paid about 55k.
2) Work 55 hour weeks from 35 to 55. Get paid about 80k.
3) Get laid off and never find a good programming job again at 55. Get paid about 35k.

There are MANY OTHER FIELDS that pay better for less hours or pay better for more hours.

There are many other fields that have a lot more status. There are many other fields that have a lot more women working in them (That matters after a while believe it or not).

There are MANY other fields where you do not have to work at 3am every third saturday installing software that can't be installed during normal business hours and then you are still expected to come in monday at 8am and work a full shift. At many companies they won't even give you a bonus for the extra time- it's just "part of the job."

So I'm glad we are smart enough to leave this dead-end low status job behind us and presumably move on to other fields that pay more, have better status, and better working hours.

And I didn't even get into the fact that this field has NO FUTURE except to be outsourced to those smart young people in other countries willing to work for what would be poverty wages here. It will have no future until our economy evens out with their economies.
