That's why OPT-IN is the only reasonable solution
Most people don't have the time to opt-out of all the pure garbage that comes in off the internet and spammers know this. Even so, even if you do opt-out, the slimeball that sent the spam will likely just use that as a confirmation of an active email address and send you even more spam.

Those that DO honor opt-out requests will simply have spam sent to you from a different company and email address after they get done selling your address to a couple thousand other spammers. After this, you can make a career out of opting out of spam lists because you won't have time for anything else.
