Depends on your needs
As with all technologies, there are pros and cons to each:

- If you just want text with simple line graphics, most any current generation laser printer will do.
- If you want high-res color, we haven't gotten to the point yet where toner can be as fine as ink droplets. As such, color done on lasers show noticably more grain than on a decent ink jet.

Are the supplies for both outrangeously priced? Absolutely. But, like razors from Gilette (in the US), the razors themselves are almost free. It's the blades that will cost you far more over the life of the printer.
