I have no problem with you expressing your opinion since you have taken the time to be informed. What I object to is the drive by kneejerk reaction that some issues are treated with here. When someone accuses the plaintiff of being a thief or comitting fraud for excercising what they consider a valid patent it tends to take the arguement to an emotional level rather then a factual one. That is hardly productive.

Software patents are one of the more serious issues affecting the industry today. I too feel they are having a negative affect on the landscape but understand the need to protect ones intellectual property. Too a large degree patents have broken down the cooperation between companies that used to provide usefull standards. This is resulting in disparate technologies being released into the market place such as the two formats for HD DVD. This does not benefit the consumer or the companies trying to sell the devices. Since their is no clear standard the consumer will hold back on purchasing waiting to see who is the winner. Those early adopters that do buy the wrng standard will be abandoned.
