Safely ignoring metrics.
As mentioned in my post, export oriented businesses such as wineries have switched to metric. They could get away with it because the amounts are similar.

The public ignores it. They purchase a quart of wine happily. If someone used the word litre, there'd be only confusion.
No need to change. Customs remain stable.

The committee charged by law with implementing the metric system in the US abolished itself. The project was hopeless. That's a proud spirit!

Other countries have had to swallow a change in systems when their leadership announced they were being compelled to make the change under threat of losing trade. Humiliated, oppressed, the people of these countries gave up their heritage, their history under economic threat. Those countries which had been colonized must have experienced greater pain than others.

So, yes, tyranny identifies itself in the implementation of the metric system. I would like to think rebellion abides, waiting the chance to throw off the arbitrary imposition, and show honorable pride in their local units of measurement. The human spirit can be damped, but all the embers are never extinguished.
Opposition to the metric system is what makes human human.

[When I hyperbolize, I don't settle for less than the best.]
