Just an example...
... of what you earlier referenced with gallons of wine or, as I preferred to think, flasks of scotch (.375 for the curious).

Language works at first by association. Tell someone two numbers and all they learn is a translation ratio. Give them a sensation (visual or tactile or kinesthetic, as above) to which they can relate and they convert much more simply.

The measurement number really doesn't make an impression on people other than to compare if one oddly shaped bottle and another bottle contain the same quantity of intoxicant. Likewise, tell someone that -2 is cold and 10 is sweater weather, and 30 is grounds to wear shorts and the conversion is made not in numbers but in language. Similarly, 88 gets you home; 100 gets you a ticket. See at what I'm getting? No conversion to number - conversion to consequence.

As for me? My horse gets 33 millarium to the 11 libran buckbag and that's how I likes it.
