Wasn't discussing the adult work ethic...
... particularly not yours.

Sorry if I wasn't clear.

Look, in a number of other countries kids barely into puberty take a set of exams that will determine the rest of their lives. Parents who want the best for their children work them very hard and long because even a small difference in results years later can matter hugely to their futures.

I've read that in Japan people in college slack off a great deal because their important work has been done. (May not be true now, may not have been true then; I'm using the fact this idea was published to show how significant these exams are.)
In France, there's one college that produces almost all the government leaders; I won't name it for fear of discussing France unnecessarily.
In Germany, some people go onto higher level academic schooling, others prepare to enter trades. As the result of a test.

Even here, there are parents who believe they have to prepare their children for the Ivy League from infancy. They may or may not be right, but the government is not allocating places based on the results of one test.

For most people in the US, there's more confidence, less desperation. That reduced intensity leads some to lower achievement. And that's bad.

But it's a good thing that people in the US have less knowledge of their fate at an early age.
