Yes, but even with the butcher and the pub owner, you (not they) decide whether to provide your information, and how much. You are in control.

If I went to your pub and was refused service until I told them my name and phone number, I would be just as uneasy as with a "faceless" corporation.

I was at a store recently that sells lots of technical things ... TVs, DVDs, computers, etc. They wanted my ZIP and the last 4 digits of my phone number. Um ... that is enough to uniquely identify my complete phone number, and more. But that's kind of cool trick ... ZIP and the last for digits of my phone number. It makes it sound innocent.

I said "no," but the clerk told me it was store policy, and that he needed it. So I rattled off some fake numbers. They lie. I lie. Screw 'em.
