Not all should be counted as lost time
I agree that time spent sorting through spam is a major hit in productivity, but that doesn't mean that all time spent working on email should be counted as lost time, as the article seems to imply. What those figures also reflect is that each day email is becoming a more integral part of companies' business processes.

I work in a company where nothing is really "official" until an email has been written about it, so of course I spend a great part of the day reading and responding to emails.
