Alteration Tips for Formal Dresses

Vintage Prom Dress
prom dresses are a much-anticipated indulgence. With all the importance given to glamour in prom parties, designers are vying to provide the hottest and most sought after designs for young women who want to make a splash. If the idea is to stand apart from the crowd, or to leave a long lasting impression, the best option is the vintage prom dress, which is really hot this season.

Prom dresses in the 1950s were soft and romantic, generally full length, with a soft, innocent yet romantic look. Cap sleeves, satin waistbands, lace, bodices and frilly frocks with lantern sleeves represented beauty and femininity. Later, several more flamboyant styles emerged, like gaucho pants, bolero jackets, and other fads like the harem look with the ballooning skirt, all inspired by Hollywood.

Vintage prom dresses have become very popular. The 50's and 60's looks are back with long chiffon gowns with full collars and full-length sheer train; glamorous strapless dresses with winged upper bodice and a full skirt. Semi-sheer chiffon gowns with embroidered organdy and Empire waist-favorites in the 60-are also making a comeback among the younger set. Most are opting to dress up their ensembles with vintage jackets, coats, shoes, shawls and jewelry.

Proms throughout the country are being planned based on themes, such as 60s movies, making vintage dressing even more fun and dramatic. And designers are more than willing to give you that look. There are several web sites, which provide information as well as options to order vintage prom dresses. These sites also provide original antique dresses for an even more authentic look. Online stores also provide the option of custom designing your own vintage prom dresses based on options provided. They also allow for alterations, and are ideal for custom fitting for petite as well as plus sizes.

Prom Dresses and Alterations - Getting That Perfect Fit
Let's face it. Most of us aren't the ideal "beauty queen" size that's often set forth in magazine or television ads. We're not super models, but each of our bodies is beautifully designed in a unique way. What does this mean when it comes to buying prom dresses? Alterations! If you need alterations for your prom dress, don't worry. Many girls have to get alterations for various reasons. Maybe the waistline is a little too short or too long. Maybe the hemline is too long. Perhaps the bust area needs to be taken up or expanded. Alterations are a natural part of buying a prom dress, wedding dress, or any other type of formal wear, so you're not alone.

Even if you've taken all the right measurements in all the right places, alterations may very well be a reality. Or, even if you've shopped around for the perfect material and colors for you, and even if you've tried on a similar dress before buying online - you might have to get alterations no matter how much you've tried to avoid it.

Think of eveningwear alterations as actually custom tailoring a prom dress to get the perfect fit for you. This doesn't mean your body has an awkward size or shape. It simply means that prom dresses are often designed (or molded) to fit a certain body type, and no two persons are exactly alike.

When buying prom dresses online, take accurate measurements beforehand to reduce the number of alterations needed later. You'll save time and money by requiring fewer alterations. This is money you can spend on prom dress accessories such as jewelry, shoes, hairpieces, make-up, gloves, etc.
