- I rather doubt Keppler is travelling at the speed of light. The binary system of Alpha-Centauri is 4.2 light years. At the current speeds of our space craft it would take over 100,000 earth years to reach these closest neighbors to our sun. Popular Mechanics often plays loose with facts. What they mean is, that Keppler will orbit Earth at a geo-stationary (36,000 miles) and do research from there.
