RE: Five ways Microsoft has changed since Gates left
They have crushed every rung of the ladder they climbed to the top and now can't go anywhere. Honestly, this is the state of the company. I don't see much of a change myself beyond more subtle acts of desperation and corporate bullying where the media is concerned.

Long before Gates left they drew a line in the sand and made it clear that either you're all in with Microsoft or your not and you can loose everything remotely associated with their company. No one should forget that Windows 7 is what Vista should have been and if you bought Vista you're paying for a patch. But more importantly, Windows can't do much more then it does now and remain Windows.

So for a company built on marketing an obsolete product, they have to stay closed, pompous, and call your bluff on switching systems while you still have a dependency on their products or loose you as a consumer to superior products. Gates left because he knew Microsoft was going down sooner or later. Ballmer can't do any more or less but gamble between a crushing failure as number one or a slow decline into oblivion.

That said, there really isn't any need to do much beyond the typical, "Tell us how good your think we are." promotions. Either Microsoft will grow huge and take over everything with no obligation to improve their product and the government will eventually take them down with anti-trust suits, or they simply fail miserably and get pushed out of the market.
