Everyone wants something for free, but they don't want to pay for it. While I completely understand this, I don't have an answer for you.

My problem comes from the engineering world with having to deal with AutoDesk which personally I think is such an evil company that I don't think Blizzard/Activision could match if they tried. AutoDesk releases a new version of their software every year. And then takes the software that is four versions old and refuses to upgrade it. This I don't have a problem with. What I have a problem with is that I start out with 20 engineers, I buy software for each of them. A year later, I add five more. When I purchase the appropriate licenses like a good little Admin, I have to buy the new version and upgrade the other 20 versions as well so that everyone is on the same page. While I could just add the new seats and teach them to save in the old format, if the new guys mess with a drawing template, they can't save in an older version and wheee, everyone has to upgrade.

Oh and let's say I decide not to upgrade anyone, after the version of the software is so old and I need to move it to another computer. Uh Oh, I can't activate it....

So pardon me if this abuse of the activation system tends to get me a bit upset. I avoid any sort of Authentication scheme if I can. Yes I made an exception for Windows, but that will probably change as the PC games that I used to enjoy are also using the same technology.

PC games have and always will be on the edge of technology. The PC has the latest and greatest platform and if it doesn't the PC soon adapts. I have enjoyed my 15 plus years as a PC gamer. Blizzard was a revolutionary in this field. In an age where strategy games were becoming overly complicated, Blizzard tried to keep the game simple yet complex enough to be fun.
