The idea is to reduce piracy, not eliminate
Connecting to battle.net to originate your multiplayer
games whether they be local private matches or public
internet matches is hardly an invasive means of anti-
piracy by today's standards. In addition, Blizzard is
giving back by having battle.net provide utility to its
users in the form of achievements, stats tracking,
community discussions and yet to be announced other
features. Also, there's the current feature of
automatically downloading and updating your game when a
new patch is released. All of this functionality is very
similar to Steam and yet less invasive than Steam because
Steam requires you to connect to even when you want to
play single player (I believe).

So, forgive me if I fail to identify with the most vocal
critics on this subject. If you don't have broadband, you
are definitely in the minority, and if you haven't
realized it yet, capitalism does not cater to the
minority.

Another criticism I've heard is that "all of this is
worthless because the game will be pirated anyway." Of
course it will! But I think this method will be such a
hassle that people will just break down and buy the game
as they should. Blizzard makes quality games. They are
talented, skillful and creative, and they deserve to be
compensated for their efforts. Plus, playing the game
legitimately ensures fair online games since Blizzard will
be able to eliminate cheaters on battle.net. You don't
get that with rogue battle.net servers. Not only that,
but the potential for malicious users to compromise your
computer is greatly increased when playing pirated games
on rogue servers.

So, to the critics, I say that your criticism is hasty,
irrational and immature. And if you choose not to buy the
game, you will not be missed.
