Bad Statistics.

...How is an old machine reloaded completely any more or less secure then one bought new?

The slowness to upgrade has as much to do with having to buy a new machine with Vista as it has to do with the slowing economy. Nobody wants to have a buggy operating system crush their company in the heat of an economic slump.

As for reliability of power supplies, etc. That has more to do with the PC manufacturer then the age of the machine. Companies like Dell under-power their machines. They are just as likely to fail after a week as they are after a year, and if they make it a year they will probably go as long as anything else.

Plus, I'd put my old PC running UBUNTU against a new machine running Vista any day in terms of security.
