RE: What PC makers are paying for Windows 7
Way too much. And the price of Netbooks keeps dropping, already Windows is a substantial percentage of the price of netbooks, and will only become even more significant as time goes by. Already I can offer Netbooks at least $50.00 cheaper, and considerably more performant, with Linux.

My partner and I recently had a stand at a Computers and Technology Trade show in our region. I tried a Windows (XP) powered net book for the first time, and was surprised at just how much less performant it is than the equivalent Linux powered ones we offer. The salesman at the stand suggested that as it was only really designed for web surfing and emailing the low performance was quite acceptable, then I showed him just how much more performant our Linux powered netbooks are, he was unable to make that argument, at least me. In addition I was able to demonstrate our Linux powered netbooks, and people were able to see for themselves just how superior the Linux powered netbooks are, comming as they do with a full suite of applications from Office to Image editing to multimedia. I demonstrated how I can use the machine as an excellent stand in for my main desktop machine, by performing Image editing tasks while playing a movie in the background, with 8 sizable applications open on the desktop, all with no noticable loss of performance.

I was even able to switch to the standard Ubuntu (the Linux I'm using is Ubuntu Netbook remix) desktop and demonstrate the full 3D capabilities of the machine with the Compiz Desktop cube, and some of the flashy effects.

After having seen the performance of a Windows powered netbook, I can understand why such a high percentage of them is returned by dissatisfied customers. It is, when compared to the Linux powered ones we offer, like wading through treacle, to use a Windows powered netbook.
