Low pay

The trick with low pay is missed by John Carroll, you and millions others. The trick is that EVERY H1B worker comes through middleman to the USA. Those can be called contractors, consulting companies etc. Almost none of them are direct employers with ongoing project. Companies having projects are just clients to middle man at some point. Middle man is usually small (these days they got far bigger, but dies to outsourcing overseas rather than getting H1B workers).

Now statistics can be obtained from direct employer - middle man - or client paying for the job. The middle man frequently took half of our salary. We were bound by US legal contracts and we agreed to that low salaries which still were above what we could get in our countries (they had to be or one would want escape contry for some other reason).

Actually the chain of employment was much longer in the past. I worked for a contractor who worked for large consulting company and that consulting company put us on a project at client's place.

If you count how much they took from our work we easily dropped to 30-50% of what was paid to direct employee or consultant. Those lucky once with green cards or citizenship could easily make $50-$80 per hour (yes, that's true!... and multiply that by about 2000-2200 hours of work yearly) while many of us were making about $20 frequently for the same job (not always though as foreigners tend to be trearted as juniors in the USA while sometimes having more experience than project leader... only for example from Europe which made things very funny sometimes).
