...to American competitiveness. I noted in the article that America's history is one of rapid response to change, all in pursuit of corporate profits. Need I remind everyone that America IS the richest nation in the world. People need to remember why that is the case

First point, WW2 turned us into a superpower and the fall of the Soviet Union turned us into the only superpower. Second point, just because some of the richest individuals and corps are in America -- does NOT mean the vast majority gets to share in any of that wealth. Remember, it's THEIR money -- they don't have to share any of it.

Rich companies lead to low unemployment rates, because rich companies can hire lots more people. Rich companies lead to higher standards of living, and the ability to AFFORD strong environmental protections (even if the current administration in the United States seems to care little about the environment).

Trickle-down economics does not work. The goal of any "bottom-line" corporation is to be as rich as possible. Getting cheap labor factors into the equation. For all the hoopla surrounding Nike's sweat shops -- the price is still high here in America. In other words, not only do American consumers not get a break -- they're out of a job too. It's called "milking the economy".
