The ad hominem canard

How does my being in Europe have ANYTHING to do with this discussion, except as a way to let YOU not think about the issues I pose? Do you honestly think that it is easier for an American to get a job in Europe, given the tangle of regulations which exist to prevent Americans from doing just that?

As for the claim that American workers were being "exploited," bullsh*t. American workers were being forced to compete with foreigners who were AS qualified, and paid ALMOST the same amount of money as foreign workers. Free trade is wonderful when it's just autoworkers in detroit who have to face competition. When its IT workers with high salaries and stellar benefits, no way, time to put up the steelclad import barriers and hold out the labor competition.

But that's all immaterial, because the H-1B program brought in a ridiculously small number of extra workers into the United States. And besides your attempt to downplay the REAL issue (which is IT outsourcing), you are doing yourself no favors when they can't bring foreign workers to the United States. When they bring foreign workers over, they automatically become MORE expensive than if they stayed in the home country, because America has a more expensive standard of living and they will OF NECESSITY have to pay them more than if they just left those workers at home. In other words, you make outsourcing even MORE appealing because they CAN'T bring that worker stateside.

You want to pretend that H-1B is a cause of the difficulties currently faced by American IT workers, that's your problem. But don't expect me to go along with it.
