The bottom line matters...
...to American competitiveness. I noted in the article that America's history is one of rapid response to change, all in pursuit of corporate profits. Need I remind everyone that America IS the richest nation in the world. People need to remember why that is the case.

Rich companies lead to low unemployment rates, because rich companies can hire lots more people. Rich companies lead to higher standards of living, and the ability to AFFORD strong environmental protections (even if the current administration in the United States seems to care little about the environment).

Economics implies change, and what is changing is that the third world is acquiring the skills to compete in areas that the west has grown accustomed to treating as their own private sandbox. That's NOT a bad thing, no more than it was a bad thing for Japan to start competing in cars and electronics. America's best and greatest hope for future growth is the development of foreign markets, leading to richer consumers in those markets capable of buying more American goods. Japanese success didn't gut America's economy (like I said, America IS still the richest nation in the world), nor will Chinese and Indian success.

American workers have to roll with the changes, though, just like foreign workers do. Adjustment sucks, but it's life as long as scarcity exists in the world.
