Lunar Mission
The purposes of going to the moon should be to:

1. Construct a permanent, self-sustaining residence(s).

2. Construct a lunar surface to L1, L2, L4, or L5 launch system for construction and supply of space-based construction platforms.

3. Construct solar energy collection system to supply the lunar residences, launch center, and industries.

4. Research and development of vacuum industries and survival.

5. Astronomy and Astrophysics research.

The biggest problem with mining the moon for materials is that the lack of processes that consolidate ores into easily used deposites. No erosion processes (atmospheric winds or water currents) means that ores are not sorted by specific gravity. Lack of biological processes means that ores are not consolidated by organisms by selective ingestion or excretion/elimination.

NASA learned to fast expensive way to the moon during the Apollo race. Now it's time to go back to the slow, steady, most cost-effective, long-term method.
